A strong online presence is a real driving force for your business. Within your local community, people should be able to easily find your location, hours, and contact information — a well-optimized Google Business listing is one of the best ways to make that happen.
A Google Business listing has its highest visibility within about a 20-mile radius, so the focus is local. Make it as easy as possible for people to reach you — and even if you already have a listing, there's usually room to improve it.
Optimize the Listing
Start in the Info section and make sure everything is current. Your primary category should reflect your core industry, with a secondary category for a more specific focus. Extend your business hours where you can — many service professionals use the 24-hour open feature so the listing never shows as closed. Keep your contact information identical to what appears on your other digital assets.
Add a link to your website and quality photos of your business. Your business description is a client-facing pitch — include the keywords potential customers would actually search for, and keep the focus on the service you provide.
Reviews and FAQs
A steady stream of recent reviews does more for your visibility than almost anything else — the more positive reviews you have, the more local searches surface your listing, and the more credible the page looks. It also helps to have friends or family add a few questions to your page, either ones you suggest or based on their own experience — it gives you a public chance to clear up common misconceptions.
Discoverability and Availability
Turn on the messaging feature so potential clients can reach you without visiting your website. Respond quickly, and your visibility improves further. The Google Business app is available for both Android and iOS.
Once your listing is verified, it surfaces on Google Maps — the more people search for your area, the more likely you are to show up, which strengthens your relevance score in Google's algorithm. Syncing your listing with Bing Places extends that same visibility to a wider set of search engines.
Your website, social presence, and Google Business listing all work together to improve your overall SEO. Posting regularly, sharing updates, and offering useful content keeps the listing active — and an active, optimized listing is what actually improves your local digital presence.
